  Billing Clerk/Lab Assistant

Status: .80 FTE, Non-Exempt
Work Schedule: 1st & 2nd Shift, every third weekend
Primary Functions: Responsible for charge review, reference lab charge entry, hold list review, working with Business Office, HIM, IS, coding, insurance and claims to reduce the number of late charges. Compiles and maintains the medical records to document patient testing. Abstracts and codes clinical data by combining ethical judgment, technical skills, policy, and legal guidelines. Ensures compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards through expert knowledge and continued education in the area of coding and documentation standards. Responsible for performing and maintaining the general clerical functions of the Laboratory department, including direct patient contact. Obtains patient orders and completes ABN’s if medical necessity is not met. Verify all admissions demographics, including insurance and physician assignments, contained in the face sheet. Responsible for HPF Queue, provider signatures, proper diagnosis, and provider orders if incorrect or needed. Responsible for adding/removing charges that are incorrect and reporting necessary removal/write-offs to Insurance office. Responsible for drawing patients when needed in Outpatient, ED, MDO, Surgery, nursing homes, and patient homes. Responsible for assisting with the stocking and inventory tracking of general supplies used within the department. Also responsible for organizing and supervising blood collection work area and performing phlebotomies on inpatients, outpatients, and nursing home patients.
Qualifications: Must possess high school diploma or equivalent. Medical Assistant Degree required. Previous experience in a healthcare setting preferred. Previous experience in data entry, medical insurance, accounting, and/or credit and collections preferred. Must have proficiency in clerical skills, computer skills, and phone etiquette. Knowledge of medical terminology is preferred. Must have strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Must be able to perform many different functions, often changing from one task to another without loss of efficiency or composure. Must be able to work under stress when confronted with critical or unusual situations. Must be able to work in situations requiring staying within an exact set of limits and work accurately. Must possess the ability to operate a variety of office machines, including calculator, fax machine, and copy machine. Must possess valid Mandatory Reporter training for Child and Dependent Adult Abuse. Must be able to read, speak, and write fluent English. Prior experience in phlebotomy and laboratory setting is required. Certification in Phlebotomy is preferred. Must possess valid Iowa driver’s license. Must possess effective communication skills, both written and oral.

Work Schedule: 1st Shift. On-call for after hour support on a scheduled rotating basis.
Primary Functions: Serves as the point of contact in support and maintenance of clinical applications. Coordinates the development, implementation, standard process development, reporting, forms customization, on-going support, and application maintenance related to clinical applications. Works with the other Information Systems analysts to ensure information systems are supported and meeting the organization’s business requirements.
Qualifications: Must possess a minimum of an Associate’s Degree in Computer Science, healthcare or related field. Nursing or other healthcare licensure preferred. Must have two years of previous experience in an analyst role, preferably in a healthcare setting. Similar clinical experience may be substituted. Must have the ability to work with automated systems, as well as a variety of computer-related equipment. Must have strong skills in differentiating between process and program issues, as well as taking non-technical systems and translating those into technical models. Must possess the ability to teach and train end-users and limit dependence on him/herself. Must have excellent written and oral communication skills. Must possess valid Mandatory Reporter training for Child and Dependent Adult Abuse. Must be able to read, speak, and write fluent English.
